Staying Healthy in Winter

Ask Mary Beth
Q. Does acupuncture hurt?
A. Many patients report that their experiences range
from feeling almost nothing at all
to a brief ache, or sensations
of energetic activity near the needle. Many people who
have been fearful
of acupuncture also report
being amazed and surprised by the pleasant
experience of complete relaxation. The needles, being the width
of a human hair, are the finest needles and only shallowly
inserted into
the body.

Are acupuncture and Chinese herbals effective
in addressing allergies? Absolutely! When your constitution
is fortified, you are better suited to harmonize with the things
that would normally be troublesome for you.
The key to health is paying attention to the
seasons and the fluctuations of temperature and humidity that occur
here in the Washington capital region. The Washington metropolitan
area is
blessed with one of the most beautiful springs anywhere on
earth. However, with
the advent of spring the preponderance of pollen also manifests, causing
allergic reactions in a large percentage of the population. How
do we deal with this effectively?
We pre-treat, we build a person’s constitution, and we strengthen the body’s ability to fend off the external pathogenic factors such as the intense seasonal pollen. We do this with Chinese herbs and acupuncture. In January and February before pollination, I work with patients in anticipation of the tremendous budding of the thousands of blooming and flowering trees in the national capital region. We prepare again in summer in anticipation of the fall allergies and ragweed season.

My dog received acupuncture before I did!
"I have to admit it. I took my dog for acupuncture before I was willing to receive acupuncture myself. My dog was arthritic and I had almost lost hope; it was heartbreaking to watch her struggle. With acupuncture she's springing around like her good old self. Now, I'm receiving treatment too."
