Ask Mary Beth
Q. Does acupuncture hurt?
A. Many patients report that their experiences range
from feeling almost nothing at all
to a brief ache, or sensations
of energetic activity near the needle. Many people who
have been fearful
of acupuncture also report
being amazed and surprised by the pleasant
experience of complete relaxation. The needles, being the width
of a human hair, are the finest needles and only shallowly
inserted into
the body.

Mary Beth Gibbons, L.Ac. has been a healing presence and community member in Fairfax County for 35 years. She and her family were successfully treated with Chinese medicine, and as a result she has devoted her life to offering this medicine in a family practice. As a mother and a grandmother she has treated all ages, from children to elders. What has her engaged and passionate about this work is the self-discovery and awareness that allow each patient to recover their own well-being.
She received her Master’s degree from the Traditional
Acupuncture Institute (TAI). She is also a diplomat of the National
Commission for Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
and a member of the Acupuncture Society of Virginia. She practices
Five Element and TCM styles of acupuncture, as well as Dr. Richard
Tan’s balance method to support each patient in their healing.
In addition, she is certified in the Tobacufree™ protocol for smoking cessation, also effective in the treatment of other addictions and cravings, and she has trained in the NADA protocol. She may employ moxabustion, cupping or gua sha along with other forms of Chinese medicine.
Her first employment in organic agriculture took place at the age of five; she has since grown and tended many herbals in her own healing garden. She has studied Chinese herbs, and in many instances she recommends them for adults and children alike because they are safe and effective.
